My childhood was closely attached to the barbs and catfish who used to swim as freely as I used to in our creeks. Even now, during my short vacations, I visit where once our creeks used to be and it is amazing to see that a few of the so-called Denisonii still survise in the remaining little drops of water my people forgot to landfill and drain!

Nice to hear that people like Ms Mercy are attempting artificial breeding of these endangered species. However, as the habitats been nearly destroyed, I wonder where on earth are you gonna leave them!

Thanks to our increasing greediness at least Keralites are worried about Miss Kerala who gives them prospects of foreign earning. But now I tell my son Emad the stories of the variety of freshwater species of my childhood.... especially when he insists to keep an illegal size or species we catch in the Pacific or in the tributaries of the Morton Bay during our fishing-frenzy school holidays. Now he knows why Australian authorities are so keen on protecting their fish.

കോഴിക്കോട്: കേരളീയരുടെ തീന്‍മേശയിലെ മുഖ്യവിഭവമായ മത്സ്യങ്ങളിലും മാരക കീടനാശിനികള്‍ വ്യാപകമാവുന്നതായി വിവിധ പഠനങ്ങളില്‍ വെളിപ്പെടുത്തല്‍.
കൊച്ചിയിലെ സെന്‍ട്രല്‍ ഇന്‍സ്റ്റിറ്റിയൂട്ട് ഓഫ് ഫിഷറീസ് ടെക്‌നോളജി കേരളത്തിലെ ഭക്ഷ്യയോഗ്യമായ മീനുകളില്‍ നടത്തിയ പരിശോധനയില്‍ കടല്‍ മത്സ്യങ്ങളിലും വളര്‍ത്തുന്നവയിലും പുഴമീനിലും കീടനാശിനികളുടെ അംശം കണ്ടെത്തി. കോഴിക്കോട് ജില്ലയുടെ അഞ്ചു വ്യത്യസ്ത മേഖലകളില്‍ നിന്ന് ശേഖരിച്ച മീനുകളെയാണ് പഠനത്തിന് വിധേയമാക്കിയത്. മത്സ്യങ്ങളുടെ ഭക്ഷണത്തിന് ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന മാംസളമായ ഭാഗങ്ങളില്‍ 70.57 നാനോഗ്രാം വരെ കീടനാശിനി കണ്ടെത്തിയതായി പരിശോധനാ ഫലങ്ങള്‍ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.
ഹെക്‌സാക്ലോറോ ബെന്‍സീന്‍ എന്ന മാരക കീടനാശിനിയാണ് ശുദ്ധജല മത്സ്യങ്ങളില്‍ കൂടുതലായി കണ്ടത്. കാന്‍സര്‍ അടക്കമുള്ള മാരകരോഗങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് കാരണമാവുമെന്നതിനാല്‍ അമേരിക്കയിലടക്കം ലോകത്തിന്റെ പല ഭാഗങ്ങളിലും നിരോധിക്കപ്പെട്ട കീടനാശിനിയാണിത്. 22 ശതമാനം ശുദ്ധജല മത്സ്യങ്ങളിലും മനുഷ്യശരീരത്തിന് അങ്ങേയറ്റം ഹാനികരമായ ലോഹങ്ങളും രാസവസ്തുക്കളും കണ്ടെത്തിയതായി പഠനം പറയുന്നു. പാടങ്ങളിലും കൃഷിയിടങ്ങളിലും അമിതമായ തോതില്‍ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന കീടനാശിനികളാണ് മത്സ്യങ്ങളുടെ ശരീരത്തില്‍ എത്തുന്നതെന്ന് ഗവേഷകര്‍ പറയുന്നു. എന്‍ഡോസള്‍ഫാന്‍ പ്രശ്‌നം വീണ്ടും രൂക്ഷമായ സാഹചര്യത്തില്‍ മലബാറിലെ എല്ലാ ജില്ലകളിലെയും മത്സ്യസമ്പത്തിനെ എന്‍ഡോസള്‍ഫാന്‍ എങ്ങനെ ബാധിച്ചു എന്നതിനെക്കുറിച്ച് കൂടുതല്‍ വിശദമായ പഠനത്തിന് കേന്ദ്ര സ്ഥാപനമായ സെന്‍ട്രല്‍ ഇന്‍സ്റ്റിറ്റിയൂട്ട് ഓഫ് ഫിഷറീസ് ടെക്‌നോളജി ഒരുങ്ങുന്നതായി അറിയുന്നു. പ്രതിവര്‍ഷം 485 ടണ്‍ കീടനാശിനികള്‍ ഉപയോഗിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന കുട്ടനാട്ടില്‍ കരിമീന്‍ അടക്കമുള്ള മത്സ്യങ്ങളുടെ ആന്തരിക അവയവങ്ങളെ കീടനാശിനികള്‍ ഗുരുതരമാംവിധം ബാധിച്ചുതുടങ്ങിയതായി ഏഷ്യന്‍ ഫിഷറീസ് സൊസൈറ്റി നടത്തിയ പഠനം പറയുന്നു. പ്രത്യുല്‍പാദനപരമായ അസ്വാഭാവികതകള്‍, അവയവ തകരാറുകള്‍ എന്നിവ ശുദ്ധജല മത്സ്യങ്ങളില്‍ ദൃശ്യമാവുന്നുണ്ട്. അടിയന്തര നടപടികള്‍ സ്വീകരിച്ചില്ലെങ്കില്‍ കേരളത്തിന്റെ ശുദ്ധജല മത്സ്യസമ്പത്ത് കീടനാശിനികള്‍ കാരണം ഇല്ലാതാവുമെന്ന് പഠനം പറയുന്നു.
കുട്ടനാടന്‍ പാടങ്ങളില്‍ കുട്ടനാട് വാട്ടര്‍ ബാലന്‍സ് സ്റ്റഡി പ്രോജക്ട് നടത്തിയ പഠനത്തില്‍ തെളിഞ്ഞത് ഞെട്ടിപ്പിക്കുന്ന വിവരങ്ങളാണ്. 485 ടണ്‍ കീടനാശിനിയാണ് ഓരോ വര്‍ഷവും കുട്ടനാടന്‍ പാടങ്ങളില്‍ വീഴുന്നതെന്നാണ് 90കളില്‍ നടത്തിയ പഠനം വ്യക്തമാക്കുന്നത്. ഇതില്‍ പുഞ്ചകൃഷിക്ക് മാത്രം ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത് 370 ടണ്‍ കീടനാശിനികളാണ്. ഈ കണ്ടെത്തലുകളുടെ അടിസ്ഥാനത്തില്‍ പുഞ്ചകൃഷിയിലെ കീടനാശിനിയുടെ ഉപയോഗം കുറക്കണമെന്ന് പഠനം നടത്തിയ സമിതി കര്‍ശന നിര്‍ദേശം നല്‍കിയിരുന്നു.

പെരുവണ്ണാമൂഴി, കുറ്റിയാടി, കോരപ്പുഴ എന്നീ പുഴകള്‍ കക്കയം വനഖേലയുടെ സംഭാവനയായാണ്. കക്കയം,പെരുമണ്ണാമൂഴി റിസര്‍വോയറിന്റെ തീരത്തെ വനപ്രദേശങ്ങള്‍ വന്യജീവികളാല്‍ സമ്പന്നവുമാണ്. കക്കയത്തെ ഇടതൂര്‍ന്ന കാടുകളില്‍ നടത്തിയ പഠനത്തില്‍ ഒട്ടനവധി അപൂര്‍വ സസ്യങ്ങളെയും ജീവിവര്‍ഗങ്ങളെയും കണ്ടെത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. കക്കയം ഡാം സൈറ്റിനടുത്തെ ശങ്കരന്‍പുഴ വനത്തില്‍ ആന, കാട്ടുപോത്ത്, പുള്ളിമാന്‍, മ്ലാവ്, കേഴമാന്‍, കരിങ്കുരങ്ങ് എന്നിവ യഥേഷ്ടമാണ്. വൈവിധ്യമാര്‍ന്ന നിരവധി പക്ഷികളും ഉരഗവര്‍ഗങ്ങളും മല്‍സ്യങ്ങളും ഷഡ്പദങ്ങളും വേറെ.കക്കയം, പെരുവണ്ണാമൂഴി കേന്ദ്രീകരിച്ച് ഇപ്പോള്‍ തന്നെ നിരവധി സഞ്ചാരികളാണ് എത്തുന്നത്. കക്കയം ഡാംസൈറ്റ്, കക്കയംവാലി, ഉരക്കുഴി വെള്ളച്ചാട്ടം, അമ്പലപ്പാറ, പപ്പന്‍കയം, കരിയാത്തന്‍പാറ, ബാണാസുരമല എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിലെ ടൂറിസ്റ്റ് സ്‌പോട്ടുകള്‍ കേന്ദ്രീകരിച്ചാണ് സന്ദര്‍ശകര്‍ ദിനംതോറുമെത്തുന്നത്.കക്കയം ഇക്കോ ടൂറിസം പദ്ധതിയുടെ ഭാഗമായി നാലുലക്ഷം രൂപ ചെലവിട്ട് ഉരക്കുഴി ഭാഗത്ത് ഈയിടെ തൂക്കുപാലം നിര്‍മിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. കരിയാത്തന്‍, കക്കയം റിസര്‍വോയറുകള്‍ കേന്ദ്രീകരിച്ച് പെരുവണ്ണാമൂഴി വരെ ബോട്ട് സര്‍വീസും നിലവിലുണ്ട്.

ഉള്‍നാടന്‍ മത്സ്യമേഖലാ നിയമം ഉടന്‍ പാസാക്കും -മന്ത്രി ശര്‍മ

കൊച്ചി: ഉള്‍നാടന്‍ മത്സ്യ കൃഷി വികസനം ലക്ഷ്യമിട്ടുള്ള ഉള്‍നാടന്‍ മത്സ്യമേഖലാ നിയമം ഈ നിയമസഭാ സമ്മേളനത്തില്‍ പാസാക്കുമെന്ന് ഫിഷറീസ്-രജിസ്‌ട്രേഷന്‍ വകുപ്പുമന്ത്രി എസ്. ശര്‍മ പറഞ്ഞു. 'മത്സ്യകേരളം' മത്സ്യകര്‍ഷക അവാര്‍ഡ് വിതരണവും മത്സ്യകര്‍ഷക സംഗമവും ഉദ്ഘാടനം ചെയ്യുകയായിരുന്നു മന്ത്രി.

ജൈവ വൈവിധ്യം സംരക്ഷിക്കാന്‍ ഉള്‍നാടന്‍ മത്സ്യമേഖലയെ സംരക്ഷിക്കേണ്ടത് ആവശ്യമാണ്. ഇതിനായി സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ വിവിധ പദ്ധതികള്‍ ആവിഷ്‌കരിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. അടുത്തമാസം ഒരുകോടി മത്സ്യവിത്തുകള്‍ കേരളത്തിലെ ഉള്‍നാടന്‍ കായലുകളില്‍ നിക്ഷേപിക്കും. മത്സ്യമേഖലയില്‍ പ്രവര്‍ത്തിക്കുന്ന 700 ക്ലബുകളില്‍ 100 എണ്ണത്തിന് അഞ്ചുലക്ഷം രൂപവീതം നല്‍കും. ഈ വര്‍ഷം ഉള്‍നാടന്‍ മത്സ്യമേഖലയില്‍ നിന്നും കേരളത്തിന്റെ ഉത്പാദനം 1,26,000 ടണ്ണാണ്. മുന്‍ വര്‍ഷങ്ങളെ അപേക്ഷിച്ച് മത്സ്യ ഉത്പാദനത്തില്‍ വര്‍ധനയുണ്ട്. വരുംവര്‍ഷം ഇത് രണ്ടുലക്ഷം ടണ്ണായി വര്‍ധിപ്പിക്കാനാണ് ലക്ഷ്യമിടുന്നത്.

ഉത്പാദന വര്‍ധനയ്‌ക്കൊപ്പം ഈ മേഖലയുടെ സംരക്ഷണവും സര്‍ക്കാരിനു മുന്നിലുണ്ട്. പുതിയ നിയമം അതിന് സഹായകമാകുമെന്നും മന്ത്രി വ്യക്തമാക്കി.

എറണാകുളം ആശിര്‍ഭവനില്‍ നടന്ന ചടങ്ങില്‍ ഡൊമിനിക് പ്രസന്‍േറഷന്‍ എം.എല്‍.എ. അധ്യക്ഷത വഹിച്ചു. ഗ്രാമപഞ്ചായത്ത് അസോസിയേഷന്‍ പ്രസിഡന്റ് എം.പി. വര്‍ഗീസ്, ഡോ. ബി. മധുസൂദനക്കുറുപ്പ്, കൊച്ചി നഗരസഭാ കൗണ്‍സിലര്‍ വിന്നി എബ്രഹാം, ഫിഷറീസ് ഡപ്യൂട്ടി ഡയറക്ടര്‍ കെ.ഐ, രവീന്ദ്രന്‍, ജോയിന്റ് ഡയറക്ടര്‍ സൈറാബാനു തുടങ്ങിയവര്‍ പങ്കെടുത്തു. ഫിഷറീസ് വകുപ്പ് ഡയറക്ടര്‍ ഷെയ്ക് പരീത് റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ട് അവതരിപ്പിച്ചു.

ആലപ്പുഴ കിഴക്കേ പണ്ടാരത്തില്‍ വീട്ടില്‍ അഹമ്മദ്കുട്ടിയാണ് മികച്ച ശുദ്ധജല മത്സ്യ കര്‍ഷകനുള്ള സംസ്ഥാനതല അവാര്‍ഡിന് അര്‍ഹനായത്. എറണാകുളം പിഴല തയ്യത്ത് വീട്ടില്‍ ടി.ബി. സുരേഷ്, മികച്ച ഓരുജല ചെമ്മീന്‍ കര്‍ഷകനായി തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കപ്പെട്ടു. കാസര്‍കോട് 'സമുദ്ര' പുരുഷ സ്വയംസഹായ സംഘം മികച്ച കല്ലുമ്മേക്കായ കര്‍ഷക അവാര്‍ഡും പാലക്കാട് കിണാശ്ശേരി ഉപ്പുപാടം എ.കെ. ഫാമില്‍ ബിന്ദു അനന്തകൃഷ്ണന്‍ മികച്ച റെയറിങ് ഫാര്‍മര്‍ അവാര്‍ഡും പത്തനംതിട്ട കുളനട സുമാഭവനില്‍ സുമ ചെറിയാന്‍, മികച്ച അക്വാ കള്‍ച്ചര്‍ കോ-ഓര്‍ഡിനേറ്റര്‍ അവാര്‍ഡും ഇടുക്കി കാഞ്ചിയാര്‍ പഞ്ചായത്ത് മത്സ്യ കര്‍ഷക ക്ലബ് മികച്ച മത്സ്യ കര്‍ഷക ക്ലബ് അവാര്‍ഡും നേടി. ഇതിനു പുറമെ ജില്ലാതല അവാര്‍ഡുകളും ചടങ്ങില്‍ സമ്മാനിച്ചു.

ചാലിയാറില്‍ അറവ്‌ മാലിന്യങ്ങള്‍ തള്ളാനെത്തുന്നവര്‍ സൂക്ഷിക്കുക; ഇനി നിങ്ങളെയും കാത്ത്‌ ചന്തക്കടവ്‌ പൗരസമിതി പ്രവര്‍ത്തകര്‍ പുഴയോരത്ത്‌ കാവലുണ്ടാകും. അറവ്‌ മാലിന്യ നിക്ഷേപം കാരണം ചീഞ്ഞുനാറുന്ന ചാലിയാറിനെ സംരക്ഷിക്കുകയെന്ന ലക്ഷ്യത്തോടെ ചന്തക്കടവ്‌ പൗരസമിതിയുടെ പുഴസംരക്ഷണ പ്രവര്‍ത്തകരാണ്‌ ഈ ദൗത്യം ഏറ്റെടുത്തിരിക്കുന്നത്‌.

രാത്രി മുതല്‍ പുലര്‍ച്ചെ വരെ 10 അംഗങ്ങള്‍ വീതമുള്ള സംഘങ്ങളായാണ്‌ സമിതി പ്രവര്‍ത്തകര്‍ പുഴയോരത്തും ഫറോക്ക്‌ പുതിയ പാലത്തിലും മാലിന്യവുമായെത്തുന്നവരെ കാത്തിരിക്കുന്നത്‌. രാത്രി ഏഴ്‌മണി മുതല്‍ പുലര്‍ച്ചെ രണ്ട്‌മണിവരെ വിവിധ സമയങ്ങളില്‍ സംഘാംഗങ്ങള്‍ ഈ ദൗത്യത്തില്‍ പങ്കാളികളാകും. ആദ്യ തവണ പിടിയിലാകുന്നവര്‍ക്ക്‌ ബോധവത്‌കരണവും മുന്നറിയിപ്പും നല്‍കി വിടും. ഇവര്‍ വീണ്ടും പിടിയിലായാല്‍ ചെറിയ തോതില്‍ കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്‌തു പോലീസില്‍ ഏല്‌പിക്കും. ഒരു വര്‍ഷത്തിലധികമായി തുടര്‍ന്നുവരുന്ന ഈ പ്രവര്‍ത്തനത്തിലൂടെ ചാലിയാറിനെ ഒരു പരിധിവരെ അറവ്‌ മാലിന്യങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്ന്‌ സംരക്ഷിക്കാനായതായി സമിതി പ്രസിഡന്റ്‌ കെ.പി.സുബൈര്‍ പറഞ്ഞു. കഴിഞ്ഞ വര്‍ഷത്തെ പ്രവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങള്‍ക്ക്‌ ഫറോക്ക്‌ പോലീസിന്റെ സഹകരണവും ലഭിച്ചിരുന്നു. തൊട്ടടുത്ത പഞ്ചായത്തുകളില്‍ നിന്നും മലപ്പുറം ജില്ലയില്‍ നിന്നുമാണ്‌ പുഴയില്‍ തള്ളാനായി മാലിന്യങ്ങള്‍ എത്തുന്നത്‌. പെട്ടി ഓട്ടോകളില്‍ കൊണ്ടുവരുന്ന മാലിന്യങ്ങള്‍ ഫറോക്ക്‌ പുതിയ പാലത്തില്‍ നിന്ന്‌ പുഴയില്‍ തള്ളുകയാണ്‌ ഇത്തരക്കാരുടെ പതിവ്‌. അതുകൊണ്ട്‌ തന്നെ പാലം പരിസരമാണ്‌ സംരക്ഷണ പ്രവര്‍ത്തകരുടെ ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ പ്രധാന കാവല്‍കേന്ദ്രം. അറവുശാലകളില്‍ നിന്നും ചാക്കു കെട്ടിന്‌ വിലയുറപ്പിച്ച്‌ കരാര്‍ എടുത്തവരാണ്‌ പുഴയെ നശിപ്പിക്കുന്ന ഈ ക്രൂരകൃത്യത്തിലേര്‍പ്പെടുന്നതെന്ന്‌ സമിതി പ്രവര്‍ത്തകര്‍ ചൂണ്ടിക്കാട്ടി.

സംരക്ഷണ പ്രവര്‍ത്തകരുടെ കണ്ണുവെട്ടിച്ച്‌ തള്ളുന്ന മാലിന്യങ്ങള്‍ കരയ്‌ക്കടുപ്പിച്ച്‌ പുഴയോരത്ത്‌ കുഴികുത്തി മൂടും. അറവ്‌ മാലിന്യങ്ങള്‍ക്ക്‌ പുറമെ ചെരുപ്പ്‌ ഫാക്ടറികളില്‍ നിന്നുള്ള അവശിഷ്‌ടങ്ങളും അടുത്തയിടെയായി പുഴയില്‍ തള്ളുന്നുണ്ടെന്ന്‌ സമിതി അംഗങ്ങള്‍ പറഞ്ഞു. ഇതുമൂലം ചാലിയാറിന്റെ ജൈവ ആവാസ വ്യവസ്ഥ അനുദിനം നശിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുകയാണ്‌. പുഴയില്‍ മത്സ്യ ലഭ്യത കുറഞ്ഞു. മണല്‍വാരല്‍ തൊഴിലാളികള്‍ക്കിടയില്‍ അലര്‍ജിപോലുള്ള അസുഖങ്ങള്‍ വര്‍ധിച്ചു. പുഴയെ കൊല്ലുന്ന ഇത്തരം പ്രവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങള്‍ക്ക്‌ അവസാനം കണ്ടെത്തിയില്ലെങ്കില്‍ താമസിയാതെ ചാലിയാര്‍ മറ്റൊരു കനോലി കനാലാവുമെന്ന്‌ സമിതി പ്രവര്‍ത്തകര്‍ മുന്നറിയിപ്പ്‌ നല്‍കുന്നു. പുതിയ പാലത്തില്‍ വേണ്ടത്ര തെരുവ്‌ വിളക്കുകള്‍ ഇല്ലാത്തത്‌ മാലിന്യം തള്ളാനെത്തുന്നവര്‍ക്ക്‌ അനുഗ്രഹവുമാകുന്നു. 164 അംഗങ്ങളുള്ള ചന്തക്കടവ്‌ പൗരസമിതിയിലെ 65 ഓളം പ്രവര്‍ത്തകരാണ്‌ ചാലിയാര്‍ സംരക്ഷണ പ്രവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങളുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട്‌ പ്രവര്‍ത്തിക്കുന്നതെന്ന്‌ സെക്രട്ടറി ജംഷീദ്‌ അമ്പലപ്പുറം പറഞ്ഞു.

Vital freshwater fish species face extinction

KOCHI, MAY 23: Several commercially important species of freshwater fish in Kerala are "critically endangered" and are facing the serious risk of extinction in the near future, says a study done by a researcher at the Cochin University of Science and Technology recently.
According to the researcher B Madhusoodana Kurup, of the total 170 species of freshwater fish in Kerala's 44 rivers, the status of 90 were assessed to be as per the redlisted criteria. Though none of the species is extinct, 18 are facing serious risks owing to "alarming population decline and destruction and deterioration of habitat," the study says.
Kerala has 41 west-flowing and three east-flowing rivers with a total waterspread area of 85,000 hectares. The streams and rivers in Kerala have exceptional bio-diversity and are demarcated as hotspots in the world. The researcher has identified the major problems affecting these species as anthropogenic. Of the 18 species of fish under threat, 13 are well-endemic to Kerala.
Thirty-onespecies have been categorised as endangered and facing risks of extinction in the wilds and 18 have been categorised as under the "vulnerable". Under threatened species of lower risk, 13 species were listed.
The research findings warn that the biodiversity in Kerala's rivers is fast being depleted largely due to unsustainable and unethical practices. A variety of destructive type of fishing activities are being practiced in the inland water bodies. Poisoning, use of chemicals, electrification and dynamiting are some of them.
Besides, the natural environmental conditions are stress from man-made bunds and obstructions to the flow of the rivers creating problems like siltation and short-term floods. Large-scale abstraction of water for irrigation purposes lead to drying up of the rivers especially during the summer months. This creates serious problems for the fish species and a steady diminution of the species has been observed, the study says.
Industrial pollution has been cited as one of the majorreasons for the depletion in fish stocks in some of Kerala's biggest rivers. The paper suggests that the database on population, size and regional distribution of the fish species need to be strengthened. The data base should include details of the migration, breeding behaviour, spawning areas and possibilities of habitat preservation.
Establishment of broodstock maintenance and hatchery exclusively for indigenous endemic endangered fishes has been suggested. Introduction of exotic fish species in ranching programmes should be discouraged to allow the endemic species to flourish, the paper adds.

തിരുവനന്തപുരം: ഉള്‍നാടന്‍ ജലാശയങ്ങളിലെ മത്സ്യോല്‌പാദനം പ്രതിവര്‍ഷം രണ്ട്‌ ലക്ഷം ടണ്‍ ആക്കി ഉയര്‍ത്താന്‍ ലക്ഷ്യമിടുന്ന 'മത്സ്യ കേരള'പദ്ധതിക്ക്‌ സപ്‌തംബര്‍ അവസാനവാരം തുടക്കം കുറിക്കും. മൊത്തം 74 കോടി രൂപയാണ്‌ 700 ഗ്രാമപ്പഞ്ചായത്തുകളില്‍ ഈ പദ്ധതിക്കായി ഫിഷറീസ്‌ വകുപ്പ്‌ ചെലവഴിക്കുക. ഇതില്‍ 24 കോടി രൂപ മത്സ്യ കര്‍ഷകര്‍ക്ക്‌ സബ്‌സിഡിയായി നല്‍കും. ഇപ്പോള്‍ കേരളത്തിലെ ഉള്‍നാടന്‍ ജലാശയങ്ങളിലെ മൊത്തം മത്സ്യോല്‌പാദനം പ്രതിവര്‍ഷം 75,000 ടണ്‍ മാത്രമാണ്‌. മൂന്നു വര്‍ഷംകൊണ്ട്‌ 10,000 ഹെക്ടര്‍ജലശേഖരങ്ങളില്‍ക്കൂടി മത്സ്യകൃഷി നടത്തുകവഴി മൊത്തം ഉള്‍നാടന്‍ മത്സ്യോല്‌പാദനം രണ്ട്‌ ലക്ഷം ടണ്‍ ആക്കി ഉയര്‍ത്തുകയെന്നതാണ്‌ ലക്ഷ്യം. ശുദ്ധജല മത്സ്യകൃഷി, ലവണ ജലത്തിലെ കൊഞ്ചുകൃഷി, കല്ലുമ്മായ കൃഷി, കടല്‍ജലത്തില്‍ കടല്‍പ്പായല്‍ കൃഷി, ശുദ്ധജലത്തിലെ അലങ്കാര മത്സ്യകൃഷി എന്നിവയാണ്‌ മത്സ്യകേരളയുടെ ഭാഗമായി നടപ്പാക്കുന്നത്‌. ഇതിനാവശ്യമായ മത്സ്യക്കുഞ്ഞുങ്ങളെ ഫിഷറീസ്‌ വകുപ്പുതന്നെ കര്‍ഷകര്‍ക്ക്‌ നല്‍കും. പദ്ധതിയുടെ ആദ്യഘട്ടമായി കായലോരത്ത്‌ ചെമ്മീന്‍കൃഷിയും തുടര്‍ന്ന്‌ മറ്റ്‌ മത്സ്യങ്ങളുടെ ഉല്‌പാദനവും ആരംഭിക്കാനാണ്‌ ഉദ്ദേശിക്കുന്നത്‌. മത്സ്യകേരള പദ്ധതി നടപ്പാക്കുന്നതിനുള്ള മത്സ്യകര്‍ഷകരുടെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പ്‌ അവസാന ഘട്ടത്തിലാണ്‌. പദ്ധതി നടപ്പാക്കുന്ന ഗ്രാമപ്പഞ്ചായത്തുകളിലെ പ്രസിഡന്റുമാരുടെ നേതൃത്വത്തിലുള്ള സമിതിയാണ്‌ ഗുണഭോക്താക്കളെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കുന്നത്‌. ജില്ലാതലത്തില്‍ ജില്ലാ പഞ്ചായത്ത്‌ പ്രസിഡന്റ്‌ അധ്യക്ഷനും കൃഷി, ഫിഷറീസ്‌, സഹകരണം എന്നീ മേഖലകളിലെ വിദഗ്‌ദ്ധ രും ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥരും അംഗങ്ങളുമായ സ്റ്റിയറിങ്‌ കമ്മിറ്റിയാണ്‌ അതതു ജില്ലകളില്‍ പദ്ധതിക്ക്‌ മേല്‍നോട്ടം വഹിക്കുക വിവിധ വകുപ്പുകള്‍ ഏകോപിപ്പിച്ച്‌ നടപ്പാക്കിവരുന്ന ഭക്ഷ്യസുരക്ഷാ പദ്ധതിയുടെ ഭാഗമല്ലെങ്കിലും മലയാളികളുടെ പ്രോട്ടീന്‍ ആവശ്യകതയുടെ 40 ശതമാനം നല്‍കുന്ന മത്സ്യത്തിന്റെ ഉല്‌പാദനത്തില്‍ മുന്നേറ്റം കൈവരിച്ചാലേ ഭക്ഷ്യസുരക്ഷാപദ്ധതി പൂര്‍ണ വിജയം കൈവരിക്കൂയെന്നും ഫിഷറീസ്‌ വകുപ്പ്‌ വൃത്തങ്ങള്‍ പറയുന്നു.

We are precariously heading towards the total destruction of our aquatic fauna and flora in a few years time. The legislators and greedy politicians are selling mother nature’s gifts for petty gains.

The wholesale destruction of our pristine ecosystem can obliterate most or the rare freshwater species of Kerala. The government and people are equally responsible for protecting our beautiful rivers. Instead many are bringing up lame excuses to silence the criticism of the people who are striving to preserve the rivers and other water bodies.

It is time for us to appeal to the international eco-movements to intervene and prevent further environmental damage in our region. But we the Keralites are educated and enlightened enough to sort it out ourselves and stop this evil from escalating.

I understand the economic benefits of mining on the river banks. I am also aware of the merits of interlinking our rivers as part of our 11th plan. But no project or piece of law is acceptable that threatens the ecological balance of our freshwater species which has already been jeopardised by our reckless projects and way of life.

Please stick together and preserve the delicate balance of our beautiful nature. While interlinking our rivers may sound lucrative for our politicians and ‘economists’, it does not bode well for the myriads of our aquatic fauna and flora. Let goodwill prevail. Let’s launch a mass campaign against these atrocities. Otherwise most of creatures and plants we grew up with will be the story of the past of our posterity.

നദീതീരഖനനം: നിയന്ത്രണം നീക്കി

കോട്ടയം: ഇപ്പോള്‍ത്തന്നെ മൃതപ്രായമായി ഒഴുകുന്ന കേരളത്തിലെ നദികളെ തീര്‍ത്തും ഇല്ലാതാക്കാനിടയാക്കുന്ന സര്‍ക്കാരുത്തരവിറങ്ങി. കരയില്‍ മണലെടുക്കുന്ന കുഴിയുടെ ആഴം സംബന്ധിച്ചും പൊതുസ്ഥാപനങ്ങളില്‍നിന്നും സ്ഥലങ്ങളില്‍നിന്നും പാലിക്കേണ്ട അകലം സംബന്ധിച്ചുമുള്ള വ്യവസ്ഥകള്‍ മാറ്റിയതോടെ ഇക്കാര്യത്തില്‍ ഒരു നിയന്ത്രണവും ഇല്ലാതായി. '67 ലെ ചട്ടം 8 (എ) പറഞ്ഞിരുന്നത്‌, മണലെടുക്കുന്ന കുഴിയുടെ ആഴം 20 അടിയില്‍ കവിയരുത്‌ എന്നാണ്‌. ഇപ്പോഴാകട്ടെ, അതു നീക്കംചെയ്‌തിരിക്കുന്നു. ആര്‍ക്കും ഏതു നദീതീരവും എത്രവേണമെങ്കിലും കുഴിക്കാം; ആവശ്യംപോലെ മണലെടുക്കാം. എക്കല്‍മണ്ണ്‌, കളിമണ്ണ്‌, ചെങ്കല്ല്‌, കരിങ്കല്ല്‌ തുടങ്ങിയവയുടെ ഖനനം നിയന്ത്രിച്ച്‌ 1967ല്‍ സംസ്ഥാനസര്‍ക്കാര്‍ രൂപം നല്‍കിയ കേരള മൈനര്‍ മിനറല്‍ കണ്‍സെഷന്‍ നിയമത്തില്‍ മാറ്റം വരുത്തി അസാധാരണ ഗസറ്റായാണ്‌ വ്യവസായവകുപ്പ്‌ വിജ്ഞാപനം പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്‌ (G.O. (P) No. 2/2008/IO dated 2/1/2008 of Industries (4) Dept.). നദീതടങ്ങളുടെയും ജലവ്യവസ്ഥയുടെയും ഭൂവിന്യാസത്തിന്റെയും സമ്പൂര്‍ണനാശമായിരിക്കും ഇതിന്റെ ഫലം. റെയില്‍ലൈനിലും ദേശീയപാതകളിലുംനിന്ന്‌ 75 മീറ്ററിനുള്ളിലും റിസര്‍വോയര്‍, കുളം, കനാല്‍, തോട്‌, പാലം, മറ്റുപൊതുസ്ഥലങ്ങള്‍, വാസഗൃഹങ്ങള്‍, കെട്ടിടങ്ങള്‍, ആരാധനാലയങ്ങളുടെ അതിര്‍ത്തികള്‍, ശ്‌മശാനങ്ങള്‍ തുടങ്ങിയവയില്‍നിന്ന്‌ 50 മീറ്ററിനുള്ളിലും യാതൊരു ഖനനവും പാടില്ലെന്ന്‌ '67ലെ നിയമത്തിലുണ്ട്‌. നദീമണലിന്‌ ഒഴികെ തീരത്തുനിന്ന്‌ 50 മീറ്ററിനുള്ളില്‍ ഖനനം പാടില്ല. ആ നിയമം ഉണ്ടാക്കിയകാലത്ത്‌ നദികളില്‍നിന്നു മാത്രമാണ്‌ മണല്‍ വാരിയിരുന്നത്‌. അന്ന്‌ കരമണല്‍ഖനനം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല. നദീതീരത്തുനിന്നു കരയിലേക്ക്‌ മണലിനുള്‍പ്പെടെ 50 മീറ്ററിനുള്ളില്‍ ഒരു ഖനനവും പാടില്ലെന്ന വ്യവസ്ഥ കര്‍ശനമായി പാലിക്കുകയും ചെയ്‌തിരുന്നു. എന്നാല്‍, പുതിയ വിജ്ഞാപനപ്രകാരം നദീതീരത്തുനിന്ന്‌ കരയിലേക്ക്‌ 10 മീറ്റര്‍ മാത്രം ഒഴിവാക്കി, മണലും കളിമണ്ണും ഖനനം ചെയ്യാം; ആഴവ്യവസ്ഥകള്‍ ഒന്നുമില്ലാതെ. അകലം നിയന്ത്രിക്കുന്ന റൂള്‍ 29(ഐ)ല്‍ മാറ്റമൊന്നും വരുത്തിയിട്ടില്ല. പക്ഷേ, ഖനനത്തിനുള്ള പെര്‍മിറ്റ്‌ വ്യവസ്ഥയില്‍ വലിയമാറ്റം വരുത്തിയിരിക്കുകയാണിപ്പോള്‍. പുതിയ വിജ്ഞാപനം അനുസരിച്ച്‌, ഖനനപെര്‍മിറ്റ്‌ നല്‍കുന്ന ഫ്രഡ' ഫോമില്‍ റെയില്‍ ലൈനിലും പാലങ്ങളിലുംനിന്ന്‌ 75 മീറ്ററും സ്റ്റേറ്റ്‌ ഹൈവേ, വാസഗൃഹങ്ങള്‍, നദീതീരം എന്നിവയില്‍നിന്ന്‌ 50 മീറ്ററും അകലം പറഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ട്‌. മണല്‍, കളിമണ്ണ്‌ എന്നിവയുടെ കാര്യത്തില്‍ നദികളില്‍നിന്ന്‌ 10 മീറ്റര്‍ അകലം പാലിച്ചാല്‍ മതിയെന്നും പറയുന്നു. വിജ്ഞാപനം പുറത്തുവന്നയുടന്‍ പെര്‍മിറ്റ്‌ വിതരണവും നദീതീരഖനനവും ഉഷാറായിരിക്കുകയാണ്‌.

ഒരിക്കല്‍ ജൈവവൈവിധ്യത്തിന്‍റെ കലവറയായിരുന്ന കായല ാണ് വേ മ്പനാട്. വേമ്പനാട്ട് കായല്‍ത്തീരം മുഴുവന്‍ കൈയടക്കി റിസോര്‍ട്ടുകളും ഹോട്ടലുകളും പണിത് ടൂറിസം വളര്‍ത്തിയവര്‍ അതോടൊപ്പം തകര്‍ത്തത് കായലിന്‍റെ ജൈവവൈവിധ്യമാണ്. കായല്‍ വിനോദ സഞ്ചാരത്തിന്‍റെ പേരില്‍ നൂറുകണക്കിന് മോട്ടോര്‍ ബോട്ടുകളും ഹേറിററേജ് ടൂറിസത്തിന്‍റെ പേരില്‍ സര്‍വീസ് നടത്തുന്ന അഞ്ഞൂറിലധികം യന്ത്രവത്കുത ഹൗസ് ബോട്ടുകളും ചേര്‍ന്ന് ദിനംപ്രതി കായലിലേക്ക് വിഷം തള്ളുകയാണ്.

മലിനീകരണ നിയന്ത്രണ നിയമം കാററില്‍പറത്തിയാണ് മിക്ക ഹൗസ്ബോട്ടുകളുടെയും സഞ്ചാരമെന്ന് പരാതിയുണ്ട്. ഹൗസ്ബോട്ടുകളിലെ ശൗച സംവിധാനങ്ങളാണ് മലിനീകരണം വ്യാപകമാക്കുന്നതത്രേ.
2,3 കിടക്കമുറികളുള്ള ഹൗസ്ബോട്ടുകളിലെ കക്കൂസുകള്‍ കായലിലേക്കാണ് തുറക്കുന്നത്. ഇതോടൊപ്പം ബോട്ടുകളിലെ പാചകശാലകളില്‍നിന്നുള്ള അവശിഷ്ടങ്ങളും കായലിലേക്ക് വലിച്ചെറിയുന്നു. ആയിരക്കണക്കിന് പ്ലാസ്ററിക് കുപ്പികളും മദ്യക്കുപ്പികളുമാണ് കായലില്‍ ഒഴുകി നടക്കുന്നത്. കേരളത്തനിമയില്‍ കെട്ടുവള്ളങ്ങളില്‍ നിര്‍മ്മിക്കുന്ന ഹൗസ്ബോട്ടുകള്‍ ശക്തികൂടിയ യമഹ എന്‍ജിന്‍ ഉപയോഗിച്ചാണ് പ്രവര്‍ത്തിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്. ഈ എന്‍ജിനുകളില്‍ നിന്നുള്ള ഓയിലും കായല്‍ ജലത്തില്‍ വന്‍തോതില്‍ പടരുന്നു. ഈ എണ്ണപ്പാടകള്‍ മത്സ്യസമ്പത്തിനെ ദോഷകരമായി ബാധിക്കുന്നുവെന്ന് പഠനങ്ങള്‍ തെളിയിച്ചു.

ഹൗസ്ബോട്ടുകളില്‍നിന്നുള്ള മാലിന്യം ശേഖരിച്ച് കായലില്‍ തള്ളാതെ സംസ്കരിക്കണമെന്നാണ് കേന്ദ്ര പരിസ്ഥിതി മന്ത്രാലയത്തിന്‍റെ നിര്‍ദ്ദേശം. ഈ നിര്‍ദ്ദേശം നടപ്പാക്കാന്‍ ഹൗസ്ബോട്ട് ഉടമകളോ റിസോര്‍ട്ട് ഉടമകളോ തയാറാകുന്നില്ല. എലിപ്പനി ഉള്‍പ്പെടെയുള്ള രോഗങ്ങള്‍ കുമരകം, കുട്ടനാട്, ആലപ്പുഴ മേഖലകളില്‍ വര്‍ദ്ധിച്ചതും നിരവധിയാളുകള്‍ മരിക്കാനിടയാക്കിയതും മലിനീകരണത്തിന്‍റെ പരിണിതഫലമാണെന്ന് വിദഗ്ദ്ധര്‍ ചൂണ്ടിക്കാട്ടുന്നു. ജനവാസകേന്ദ്രങ്ങളിലൂടെയുള്ള ഇടത്തോടുകളെല്ലാം അഴുക്കുചാലുകളായി മാറി യിരിക്കുകയാണ്.

മലിനീകരണം രൂക്ഷമായതോടെ കായലിലെ മത്സ്യസമ്പത്തിനും കാര്യമായ നാശം സംഭവിച്ചു. ഏതാനും വര്‍ഷങ്ങള്‍ക്കുള്ളില്‍ വിവിധ ഇനത്തില്‍പ്പെട്ട നിരവധി മത്സ്യങ്ങള്‍ ഇല്ലാതായെന്ന് മത്സ്യത്തൊഴിലാളികള്‍ പറഞ്ഞു. ഇനിയും ജലമലിനീകരണം രൂക്ഷമായാല്‍ അവശേഷിക്കുന്ന മത്സ്യങ്ങളുടെ നിലനില്‍പ്പുപോലും അപകടത്തിലാകുമെന്നാണ് അവരുടെ മുന്നറിയിപ്പ്. മത്സ്യങ്ങളുടെ പ്രജനനത്തിന് സൗകര്യമൊരുക്കുന്നതാണ് കായലിന്‍റെ അടിത്തട്ടില്‍ വളരുന്ന കായല്‍പ്പൂവുപോലെയുള്ള ചെടികള്‍ എന്നാല്‍ ഇവയുടെ നാശം മത്സ്യങ്ങളുടെ നാശത്തിനും കാരണമായിരിക്കുന്നു . അടക്കംകൊല്ലി വല ഉപയോഗിച്ചുള്ള ബന്ധനംമൂലമാണ് കായല്‍പ്പൂവുപോലെയുള്ള ചെടികള്‍ നശിക്കുന്നത്. കായലിലെ മാലിന്യം കുമരകം പ്രാദേശിക ഗവേഷണ കേന്ദ്രത്തിന്‍റെ പിന്‍ഭാഗത്തായുള്ള 25 ഏക്കര്‍ സ്ഥലത്തെ മത്സ്യസങ്കേതത്തിനും ഷണിയായിരിക്കുന്നു .കാര്‍ഷിക സര്‍വകലാശാലയും മല്സ്യ വകുപ്പും ചേര്‍ന്ന് 35 ലക്ഷം രൂപ ചെലവഴിച്ചാണ് മത്സ്യസങ്കേതം നിര്‍മ്മിച്ചത്.

Stop and think before you interlink the rivers

I understand the economic benefits of interlinking our rivers as part of our 11th plan. But no project is acceptable that threatens the ecological balance of our freshwater species which has already been jeopardised by our reckless projects and way of life. Please stick together and preserve the delicate balance of our beautiful nature. While interlinking our rivers may sound lucrative for our politicians and ‘economists’, it does not bode well for the myriads of our aquatic fauna and flora. Let goodwill prevail.

I am not against the state government’s initiative to open up an Aqua Technology Park at Kadungalloor. As long as long as the breeding and rearing technology of ornate fishes, hybridization, biotechnological applications, etc. do not jeopardize our plans to conserve the freshwater species of Kerala, I do not oppose any enterprise, private or governmental, to experiment, produce and export ornamental fish from Kerala.
The recent introduction of genetically modified freshwater fish to the lucrative pet markets is really highjacking our attempts to preserve the precious species of our nation which are already on the verge of extinction. It could usher in a new era of unregulated transgenic pets which could disrupt the ecological equilibrium and lead to the extinction of our native fish.

The tropical Zebra fish, which is indigenous to India and Bangladesh, has been infused with the gene of a sea anemone that makes it glow a fluorescent red. Promoters of the fish, which has been trademarked GloFish, want to market it as the country’s first transgenic pet.

Under no circumstance, new hybrid or transgenic fish or foreign species should be introduced to the inland water bodies of Kerala, unless to fight any genetic diseases proven in our indigenous species.

It is said that the largest freshwater fish in the world lives, of course, in the largest freshwater river in the world - the Amazon River in South America. Arapaima, also known locally as Pirarucu, Arapaima gigas are believed to be the largest, exclusively fresh water fish in the world. They have been found to reach a length of 15 ft/4m and can weigh up to 440lbs/200kg. And yes, for you smartypants out there, sturgeon are even larger than this, but they are not exclusively freshwater fish. Sturgeon spend most of their lives at sea, or in brackish water, and only swim into freshwater rivers to spawn. Another impressively large freshwater fish that was recently caught seems to have blown the Arapaima record out of the water - the Giant Mekong catfish (Pangasius gigas). This giant catfish inhabits the waters of the Mekong River in China, which flows southward into Southeast Asia. This fish is found as far south as Cambodia and Thailand where it is known as Pla Buk, which means simply "huge fish".The dimensions of these catfish are very impressive, with the largest supposedly growing up to 10ft/3m and weighing up to 660lbs/300kg.The European wels (Silurus glanis) is the largest of the catfish family, growing to 16.6ft/5 m, and weighing as much as 726lbs/330 kg.

My Guru of Eco-friendship

He has never been a formal teacher of mine, but... I have studied in more than 13 educational institutions... in India and overseas. Prof.Sobindran has never been my teacher in any of them. With utmost respect I recall some of the outstanding teachers who taught me (rather helped me learn). I have never been a student of Zamorins Guruvayurappan College... But Prof. Sobindran is one of my four great teachers (Gurus).

I came to know about him through my brother Fasalul Haque who was a student of his. Ever since I met and talked to him, I've been under his spell... Even at this very moment... while wandering on the shores of the Pacific Ocean pondering over means to save some of the nearly extinct freshwater species of my homeland... I adore and model my great teacher who has never taught me a formal lesson.... In my quest for knowledge and 'means' I have been wandering around... different states of my beautiful India... Saudi Arabia... UAE... Oman... Maldives... Thailand.... and now in Australia... wherever I am, I keep in touch with him... seek his advice... We worked together to fight pollution in the city of Calicut and building check-dams in the suburbs.... He has always been an inspiration!

An ideal teacher is not the one who teaches you your lessons and get paid for it... but the one who ignites your engine and sends you skyrocketing up to the boundless space to see things for yourself and learn yourself... 'To follow knowledge like a sinking star... beyond the utmost bound of human thought...' Prof. Sobindran is a star which shines in a distinct corner of the firmament.

The sweet recollections of the childhood are beautifully blended in the herb-smelling breeze that sweeps gently over Chelavoor and the neighborhood…. The pleasant darkness of Thurayil Kotta, under the canopy created by the thick foliage of the tall trees….. screeching monkeys bungee-diving on the dangling vines…. The three ‘makkanis’ (teashops) known by their ‘famous’ proprietors… Bawukka’s of 6/3, Bichalikka’s of 6/4 (there were two Bichalikkas… the old and the new) and Itchappa’s of 7…. After Sub’h prayer at Pulikkil masjid…walkijng in either direction…east or southwest… a black tea with a piece of ‘puttu’(steamed rice cake) made crunchy with a crushed pappodum…. It tasted heaven compared to the McDonalds, KFC or whatever!

There was a time when my people lived in harmony with our mother nature... We felt the lives of every animate and inanimate object around us. We lived adhering to the fact that plants, animals, birds, fish, other organisms and micro-organisms were the building blocks of our serene and tranquil existence. Whatever our religious faiths were, we realised love and care for the living nature is essential for our social, physical and spiritual growth.

We woke up to a new daylight hearing the cacophonous clattering of the crows in the backyard. Pulling water with an areca leaf ‘bucket’ from the deep well, and brushing teeth with burnt husks… listening to a cuckoo’s song… mimicking and teasing the bird…. Even now thinking of those sweet days brings back beautiful memories… It touches the soul… sends a wave of inexplicable feeling… ‘Whither is gone that visionary gleam? Where is it now that vision and the dream?’
